For Everyone: Promoting Broader Understanding of Our Ocean

Mentoring Young Scientists investigate water quality during a field experience.
Undergraduates work with middle school students, leading hands-on ocean science activities and creating public demonstrations in the Mentoring Young Scientists program.COSEE Coastal Trends strives to promote a deeper understanding of the ocean and how we impact our coastal waters. Partnerships with informal education institutions and a science communication network allow us to offer several ForEducators and resources which disseminate ocean science to broad audiences.

Coastal Trends Weekend

The general public can visit the Virginia Aquarium in Virginia Beach, VA during Coastal Trends Weekend to learn more about the trends affecting our coastal oceans. Mentoring Young Scientists and COSIA students create public displays based on Scientist-Educator Partnership research topics, creating broader impacts for scientists and disseminating coastal ocean science information to the public. Science Communication Courses

Undergraduates and other program participants learn how to convey complex scientific concepts to informal audiences through Science Communication Courses. Hampton University students participate in the Communicating Ocean Science to Informal Audiences (COSIA) course; Scientist-Educator Partnership team members participate in the Science Communication and Integrated Assessment Course.
