COSEE Coastal Trends facilitates partnerships among the science and education communities. Our goals in creating these partnerships are to 1) help ocean scientists create broader impacts with their research and learn how to more effectively communicate science to broad audiences, 2) provide educators with tools to effectively integrate ocean science into the classroom, 3) disseminate the knowledge gained through ocean science research within the education community and to the general public, and 4) promote diversity in ocean sciences.
For Scientists
- Scientists make broader impacts through the Scientist-Educator Partnership program, which creates teams consisting of a scientist, graduate student, underrepresented undergraduate student, and teacher. These teams conduct summer research from which they create web-based education resources.
For Educators
For Everyone
- Undergraduates and other program participants learn how to convey complex scientific concepts to informal audiences through Science Communication Courses.
- Undergrads with middle school students, leading hands-on ocean science activities and creating public demonstrations in the Mentoring Young Scientists program.
- The general public can visit the Virginia Aquarium in Virginia Beach, VA during Coastal Trends Weekend to learn more about the trends affecting our coastal oceans.
